Riverhounds Lose to Dutch Lions on Fourth of July
July 4, 2012 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC News Release
Dayton, OH-On an extremely hot Fourth of July, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds lose to the Dayton Dutch Lions 1-0. Akeem Priestley converted the game-winning goal in the 86th minute to lift the Dutch Lions past the Riverhounds and provide his side with their second win of the season. With the win, the Dutch Lions snap the Riverhounds four-game unbeaten streak.
The game opened with the Riverhounds pressuring the Dutch Lions defense and creating multiple opportunities to find the back of the net. In the first fifteen minutes, the Riverhounds recorded four shots and looked as if a goal was in evident, but Dutch Lions goalkeeper Matt Williams was in good position to thwart the opportunities.
With a heat index up around 100 degrees on the field, the pace of the game slowed down for the remainder of the first half. Neither side would create many scoring opportunities following the first fifteen minutes of the game.
Following the intermissions, the Dutch Lions would create their first quality scoring opportunity in the 50th minute. A long service over the Riverhounds defense found the feet of Eli Garner. Out pacing the Riverhounds defense, Garner was one-on-one with Riverhounds goalkeeper Hunter Gilstrap. Taking a touch to his right, Garner fired a shot past Gilstrap but his shot went high and sailed over the crossbar.
The Riverhounds best scoring chance came in the 75th minute of play. Anthony Calvano pushed forward down the right flank and served an early cross for Mike Seth at the back post. Bringing the ball down with his chest, Seth was alone and had only Williams to beat. Seth struck a left-footed shot back across the goal, but Williams made an unbelievable reaction save as the ball trickled just wide of the goal.
The game's only goal came with just four minutes remaining in the contest. Garner played a diagonal ball from left-to-right for an on-rushing Priestley. Saving the ball just before it went out of play, Priestley beat his marker along the end-line. Tip toeing his way back towards goal, Priestley fired a left-footed shot past Gilstrap and just inside the far upright.
The Riverhounds return to action Friday night at Chartiers Valley Stadium when they host the Harrisburg City Islanders. The second meeting of the Keystone Derby will kickoff at 7:00 PM. The Dutch Lions will return to action Saturday night when they travel to Sahlen's stadium to meet the Rochester Rhinos. The game is scheduled to start at 7:05 PM.
