Riverhounds Look to Continue Late-Season Surge in Phoenix
August 15, 2014 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC News Release
The Pittsburgh Riverhounds (7-11-5) look to continue their late-season surge, as they travel to Phoenix for a match on Saturday, August 16th against Arizona United Soccer Club (7-12-5). The game is scheduled for a 7:30 PM PST start at Peoria Sports Complex and will be broadcasted live on YouTube.
The Hounds make the trip to the southwest missing several key players. Forward Jose Angulo remains out with a high ankle sprain, and defender Andrew Marshall was lost for the season with an ACL tear in last week's match against the OC Blues.
Additionally, midfielder Danny Earls will be out for the match serving a one-game suspension for aggregate yellow cards. Joseph Ngwenya will not travel with the team. While Forward Jason Johnson and midfielder Alfonso Montagalvan are both expected to join the team in Arizona.
"It's a mountain to lose Danny and Andrew. They bring fight to the team. They never give up, they fight for every ball. But we're confident with who is out there, that they're going to do their jobs, and guys are going to step up to fill that gap," said interim head coach Niko Katic.
Expect Andrew Ribeiro to be paired up with Anthony Arena at the center back position. Matt Dallman and Sterling Flunder will remain in the outside positions.
The Riverhounds held off the OC Blues FC, 1-0, at Highmark Stadium on Friday, August 8th for their sixth win in their last eight USL PRO league matches. Mike Green's goal in the 54th minute, coupled with a solid team defensive performance, helped the Riverhounds remain in the thick of the USL PRO league playoff picture. Goalkeeper Mike Lisch posted his third shutout of the year, with four saves, and consistently came off his line to thwart numerous crosses and corners to keep the Blues scoreless on the night.
Arizona United kept their USL PRO playoff hopes alive following a 2-1 victory over the OKC Energy FC at Pribil Stadium on Thursday night. Jonathan Top scored just for minutes into the match and Sam Garza sealed the win with a PK in the 74th minute.
The Riverhounds are 3 points out of the 8th and final playoff spot with five games remaining in the season, while Arizona United sit just 2 points behind the Riverhounds with four games remaining on their schedule.
The Riverhounds return home to face the FC Dallas Reserves for a 3:00PM EST match on Sunday, August 24th. Tickets are still available at www.ticketmaster.com.
