RiverHawks\' Justin Dowdy Picked Up By Anaheim
July 16, 2004 - Frontier League (FL)
Rockford RiverHawks News Release
ROCKFORD, Ill. â The Anaheim Angels have purchased the contract of two-time Frontier League all-star pitcher Justin Dowdy from the Rockford RiverHawks.
Dowdy has a record of 4-1 with two saves and an ERA of 2.39 for the RiverHawks this season. Dowdy struck out a season-high 15 batters against Springfield/Ozark on May 26th. Dowdy was voted to the Frontier League All-Star Game, representing the West Division, and pitched one scoreless inning of relief.
"We're excited for Justin," RiverHawks General Manager Mike Babcock said, "This is the second year in a row he has showcased his skills for major-league scouts at the all-star game and been picked up."
Dowdy was originally drafted out of high school in the 18th round of the 2001 draft by the Chicago White Sox. The San Diego Padres signed Dowdy after the White Sox released him.
Last season, Dowdy was an all-star with the RiverHawks before being signed on July 16th by the Seattle Mariners. He never made it back to Rockford from the All-Star Game â the Mariners assigned him to Wisconsin of the Class A Midwest League. Seattle released Dowdy in March.
To fill the roster vacancy, the RiverHawks signed rookie reliever Mica Christensen. Christensen was 5-1 with a save and a 3.99 ERA in 18 appearances for Northern Iowa University this spring.
The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 12th season.
