Rockford RiverHawks News Release
FARGO, N.D. - Kyle Ruwe pitched into the eighth inning for the second straight start and Evan McArthur matched a career high with three hits as the Rockford RiverHawks beat the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, 6-3, on Wednesday at Newman Outdoor Field.
Rockford's Kevin House and Fargo's Eric Campbell each hit a home run.
Rockford scored twice in the second inning and never trailed. Travis Scott led off with a triple just inside the bag at first base. Rich Austin brought him home on a grounder that slipped past first baseman Jesse Hoorelbeke for a two-base error. With two outs, McArthur singled to right field to drive in Austin. House led off the third with his fourth home run, a drive to left.
The RedHawks made it 3-2 with a run in the third inning and one in the fourth. Fargo got a leadoff double from Jay Cox in the third inning and Hoorelbeke in the fourth, but each rally were blunted by ground-ball outs - Ruwe had 14 - and the three following hitters in each inning all grounded out to mitigate the damage.
Rockford pulled away with three runs in the sixth inning. Patrick O'Sullivan singled in a run on a blooper to center, Austin doubled him home with a deep gapper to right-center and McArthur singled home Austin with two outs.
Campbell hit a leadoff homer in the seventh.
Ruwe (2-4), who left after a leadoff single in the eighth, won for the second time in three starts. He gave up eight hits and struck out one, but walked only one - the lone walk Ruwe's allowed in his last three starts. Jon Huizinga got the last six outs to earn his second save.
Jake Laber (3-2) struck out seven and walked one, but gave up 10 hits and lost a complete-game effort.
The series finale is at 12:30 p.m. Thursday.
The RiverHawks come home to play Schaumburg at 7:05 p.m. Friday, July 2. The Independence Day weekend starts with postgame fireworks, sponsored by Rock Valley College. It's also the Friday Fish Fry and Free Gas Friday.
