JackHammers Drop Series Finale 5-3 in Gary

GARY, IN - The Joliet JackHammers (19-19) couldn't finish off the three game sweep Wednesday night, falling 5-3 to the Gary SouthShore RailCats (21-19) at U. S. Steel Yard. The JackHammers return to Silver Cross Field tomorrow morning in an 11:10 a.m. first pitch with the Winnipeg Goldeyes.

Brad Halsey (2-2) set the tone for Gary, allowing three runs (two earned) over 7.2 innings. The RailCats made a winner out of Halsey, breaking a 2-2 tie in the sixth with two runs. Louis Ott worked a leadoff walk and Mike Rohde doubled to right to put Gary out in front 3-2. Todd Dulaney singled against a drawn in infield for the 4-2 lead.

The JackHammers rallied in the eighth, getting a one out walk by Chris Colton. Kevin Rios singled to right field, moving Colton to third with one out. Brad Correll bounced into a fielder's choice, driving home Colton to put the deficit at 4-3. Jon Nelson followed with a looping single to left to give the JackHammers runners at the corners with two outs. Brad Furnish came on for Halsey and retired Freddie Thon to end the rally.

Joliet took their only lead at 2-1 with two in the fifth, plating an unearned tally against Halsey. Ryan Wehrle walked and Josh Flores singled to lead off the frame. Roberto Mena reached on a fielder's choice after Wehrle was forced out at third on the bunt attempt. Flores and Mena advanced on a double steal with Flores scoring on a throwing error by John Parham for the first run of the night. Rafael Mendez lifted a sacrifice fly to put the ‘Hammers up 2-1.

Rory Shortell (1-4) was the tough luck loser, surrendering four runs (three earned) on eight hits over six innings. The JackHammers managed only three runs after scoring at least five in their previous six games.

Flores had his second straight multi hit game, collecting two more hits while Correll and Mendez drove home a run each.

The JackHammers have the quick turnaround tomorrow with an 11:10 p.m. first pitch as the Winnipeg Goldeyes visit Silver Cross Field for the final time this season. Ross Stout (2-4) and Chris Salamida (5-2) is the starting pitching matchup. The pre-game show comes your way at 11:00 a.m. on 1340 WJOL.
