Rockford RiverHawks News Release
ROCKFORD, Ill. â Rockford is Illinois' best sports city, according to Sports Illustrated magazine, and the Rockford RiverHawks have drawn national attention.
Rockford was named a Sportstown USA, a designation limited to one in each state, in the current issue of Sports Illustrated. In addition, the RiverHawks were mentioned in the magazine as the city's minor-league baseball team.
"Rockford is a wonderful city for sports and athletically minded people," RiverHawks general manager Mike Babcock said. "The RiverHawks are happy to have helped the city earn this kind of attention."
The Sportstown USA designation is a joint effort by Sports Illustrated and the National Recreation and Parks Association to heighten awareness of the importance of parks, recreation and leisure by honoring sports programs and facilities across the country.
The RiverHawks begin their third season on May 21 at the Windy City Thunderbolts. The âHawks open the home schedule at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday, May 25 against the Springfield/Ozark Ducks at Marinelli Field. The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 12th season.
