Rockford RiverHawks News Release
ROCKFORD, Ill. â Former major-leaguer Scott Sobkowiak will be back in a Rockford RiverHawks uniform this season.
The RiverHawks announced the signing of Sobkowiak to a 2004 contract on Monday. Sobkowiak, 26, was signed by Cincinnati last August and released by the Reds last month during spring training.
Sobkowiak has been in Rockford for the last week, working out in preparation for the season and helping the grounds crew work on Marinelli Field.
The righthander is the only player in Frontier League history with prior major-league experience. Sobkowiak pitched one inning for the Atlanta Braves against the Florida Marlins on the final day of the 2001 season. The Braves drafted Sobkowiak out of Northern Iowa University in the seventh round of the 1998 draft. He went 24-15 and averaged better than a strikeout an inning in five years in the Atlanta system.
Last year, Sobkowiak went 6-7 with a 3.85 earned-run average and 97 strikeouts in 110 innings. After signing with the Reds, he went 1-2 with a 5.91 ERA in 21 1/3 innings for the Potomac Cannons of the Class A Carolina League.
The RiverHawks begin their third season on May 21 at the Windy City Thunderbolts. The âHawks open the home schedule at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday, May 25 against the Springfield/Ozark Ducks at Marinelli Field. The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 12th season.
