Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - Starting pitcher Erick Abreu struck out six batters in 4.1 innings in his Charleston debut and Eric Wordekemper collected his third save as the RiverDogs held on to defeat the Greenville Drive, 2-1, in South Atlantic League action Monday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
With the victory, the RiverDogs have won five consecutive games and improve to 34-30, leap-frogging the Drive, which fell to 33-30, into fourth place in the S.A.L. Southern Division standings.
Charleston scored its first run in the first inning on two Greenville errors, a stolen base and a balk. The RiverDogs added a second run in the third inning on C.J. Henry's RBI single to right that plated Marcos Vechionacci, who led off the inning with a single.
The RiverDogs pitching staff made the lead hold up despite multiple threats from Greenville, which stranded 12 runners on base in the contest. Charleston, which had at least one base runner in every inning, left ten aboard.
Abreu, pitching for the first time since September 2004 after rehabbing an elbow injury, was in command during his 4.1 innings, scattering a total of three hits and walking two.
He gave way to reliever David Seccombe (3-3) with the bases loaded and one out in the fifth, and Seccombe immediately induced Dominic Ramos to ground into an inning ending double play keeping Charleston ahead 2-0.
The Drive scored their lone run in the sixth inning on a Chris Turner BRI single up the middle that scored Mark Wagner, who drew a walk against Seccombe.
After Steve Schroer pitched out of a bases loaded, one out jam in the eighth, Wordekemper struck out two in the ninth to notch his third save in as many opportunities, all of which have come during the current winning streak.
In limiting the Drive to only eight hits by five Charleston pitchers, the staff fanned 11 batters and walked five.
Drive starter Ryan Philllips (0-1), who was also making his debut for Greenville, went 3.2 innings and suffered the loss. He scattered three hits while striking our four and walking three.
Vechionacci and Jose Tabata each had two hits for Charleston, which had only six for the night. Greenville had eight base knocks, led by two from second baseman Ramos.
The second of this four-game series is set for Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. with Charleston sending southpaw Able Gomez (2-1, 3.18 ERA) to the hill while Greenville counters with righty Chris Jones (3-1, 1.93 ERA).
