Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - Josh Maurer, who has served as the Charleston's RiverDogs play-by-play announcer since 2005, has announced his resignation effective August 1 in order to become the Manager of Broadcast Properties at the University of Massachusetts.
At UMass, Maurer will serve as "Voice of the Minutemen" as he will be the lead announcer for the football and basketball teams while hosting those sports' coaches shows on television. Maurer replaces Bob Behler, who left UMass after nine years to become the voice of Boise State athletics in Idaho.
Maurer, a native of Lower Merion, PA, called games at his alma mater, the University of Maryland in College Park from 2000-03, where he was also the sports director and news director for WMUC Radio before graduating in â03. Maurer had the privilege of calling the Terrapins' 2002 NCAA Men's Basketball title game victory and the 2002 Orange Bowl.
He also has various other experiences including working two years for ESPN's "Pardon the Interruption" television show. Maurer has also worked in production with the Philadelphia Phillies television network as an assistant producer; with Comcast SportsNet Television as an associate producer for the "Sportsnite" show; handling various broadcast and media relations duties with the Brockton Rox baseball team in Massachusetts of the Can-Am League; calling games for the South Carolina Stingrays hockey team in the East Coast Hockey League and for Westwood One/CBS Sports Radio in the Washington D.C., office.
In 2004, Maurer worked as the pre- and post-game announcer for the Rox and there was first united with Dave Echols, who served as general manager for the Rox and brought Maurer with him to Charleston for the '05 season.
"Josh Maurer is the consummate professional and I personally am excited for him," said Echols. "Josh is well deserving of this great opportunity and his shoes will be hard to fill."
In addition to his RiverDogs responsibilities, Maurer also served as the radio voice for Charleston Southern University's football and men's basketball teams.
Prior to working for CSU, Maurer handled several duties at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore in Princess Anne, MD. From 2003-06, he was the play-by-play voice of the Hawks, director of broadcasting and assistant sports information director.
Echols added that Danny Reed, who currently handles the broadcast's pre- and postgame shows, will complete the season for Maurer.
"I hate to leave in the middle of the season," Maurer said. "I hate to do it to my bosses, the coaches and the players. I always like to finish a job, but the timing of the job prohibited me from staying any longer. I loved my time in Charleston more than I could say. It was a time for me to personally and professionally grow.
"I am incredibly honored to be given this opportunity at UMass," said Maurer. "I can remember going to watch UMass play in Philadelphia every year in the regular season and the A-10 Tournament. To have the opportunity to be broadcasting the games of one of the class teams in the A-10 is a dream come true. I can't wait to get started and follow in the footsteps of Bob Behler. I want to continue to satisfy the UMass faithful by keeping up the proud tradition of being the âVoice of the Minutemen.'"
