RiverDogs Open Season this Week

Richmond RiverDogs News Release


The Richmond RiverDogs open their inaugural United Hockey League season with a pair of road games this weekend. The ‘Dogs play their first ever regular season game at Elmira Friday. Richmond opens at home Friday, October 31. The ‘Dogs were 0-0-2 in the preseason, loosing a pair of shootouts to Columbus.

Friday, October 24 @ Elmira 7:00 PM

GAME NOTES: The first of 18 meetings, eight at Elmira. Jackals were 41-28-7 last year. Elmira was 1-1 in the preseason, splitting a pair of one goal decisions with Adirondack. Randy Murphy racked up 93 points for the Jackals last year.

Saturday, October 25 vs. Adirondack 7:35 PM

GAME NOTES: The first of 19 meetings, 10 in Glens Falls. IceHawks were 44-28-4 last season. They were 1-1 in the preseason. IceHawks feature long-time Richmond fan favorite Trevor Senn and UHL scoring champ Hugo Belanger.

Friday, October 17 vs. Columbus LOSS 2-1 (SO)

GAME NOTES: The The Stars beat the RiverDogs 2-1 in an overtime shootout last night. The clubs battled for over 44 scoreless minutes before Brian Ridolfi tallied to give Columbus the lead. Richmond tied the game on a power play goal by Matt Stack. The ‘Dogs dominated the third period, out-shooting the Stars 15-5 but rookie goalie Ryan Aschaber held the Stars in. Columbus out-scored Richmond 3-1 in the shootout. Richmond out-shot the Stars 35-22 for the game and went six for six on the penalty kill.

Saturday, October 18 vs. Columbus LOSS 3-2 (SO)

GAME NOTES: The Richmond RiverDogs finished their brief preseason with their second straight shootout loss to Columbus 3-2 on Saturday. The RiverDogs out-shot the Stars for the second straight night but came up short in the shootout. The 'Dogs and Stars battled through a scoreless first period for the second straight night. Richmond took a 1-0 lead in the second on a goal-mouth scramble score by Eric Erb. The Stars tied the game on a power play goal by Nick Bootland. Richmond went back out in front in the third period on a power play goal by Brad Cook. Steve Rodberg tied the game five minutes later with a blast from th e point. The Stars out-scored the RiverDogs 2-1 in the shootout to finish the preseason 2-0.

DOG BITES: The ‘Dogs named Kevin St. Jacques team captain. Jay Murphy and Luch Nasato are the alternate captains. Brian Goudie and Darren Wetherill are player/assistant coaches. The ‘Dogs signed defenseman Anthony Di Palma Monday. Richmond made four cuts following Saturday's game: LW Matt Stack, LW Peter Fargher, D Kevin Kerr, and F Eric Erb. The ‘Dogs out-shot Columbus by a combined 34-11 in the third period of the two preseason games. Richmond was 2-8 on the power play and nine for 10 on the penalty kill in the preseason. Rookie F Olivier Fillion will open the season on IR due to injury. He is expected to join the lineup in November. The ‘Dogs open the season with six of their first eight games on the road. The active roster now stands at the UHL limit of 20. There are 11 forwards, seven defensemen, and two goalies. The ‘Dogs have seven veterans (clubs can dress six for games) and three rookies. Richard Pitirri led the club in preseason scoring with two points.
