RiverDogs Offer to Host Presidential Candidates

(Charleston, SC) – The Charleston RiverDogs Thursday formally challenged all candidates in the South Carolina Presidential Primary to a debate of sorts. Each contender has been invited to take a round of batting practice at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park in preparation for the February 3 primary.

Each of the seven top candidates has received a letter inviting them to participate at an event to be held at their earliest convenience.

The goal of the event is to give the candidates a chance to unwind a bit on the campaign trail, and to invite undecided voters in South Carolina to view each contender's stance up close.

"Over the past few weeks, we've heard a lot about the candidates positions on various issues," RiverDogs General Manager Derek Sharrer said. "But can they hit a curveball?"

The RiverDogs are concerned that none of the Democratic candidates will agree to bat first for fear of being labeled the frontrunner.

Many hope the event will turn the campaign focus to important issues such as "Wooden vs. Aluminum Bats," "Natural Grass vs. Artificial Turf" or even switch hitters.

"We hope that some, if not all, of the candidates take advantage of this offer," Sharrer said. "It's a chance to take part in our national pastime and maybe provide a glimpse of these candidates we don't see every day."

Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park is often a tough place to hit, since the wind normally blows in off the Ashley River located beyond the right field fence. Political experts agree this will not be an issue for Democrats who claim to be used to wind blowing from the right.

The RiverDogs contacted the headquarters of each of the seven top contenders in the February 3 primary and have sent each candidate a formal invitation to Riley Park.

Due to Federal Election Regulations, President George W. Bush was also sent an invitation to provide the incumbent equal time to take his cuts.

Per the President's State of the Union Address Tuesday, steroids and other performance-enhancing substances will be banned from the event.

The RiverDogs will contact local media outlets when and if a candidate accepts the offer.
