River Riders Cross State Lines, Upset Bristol 4-0 in Home Opener

Bristol, VA - The Elizabethton River Riders (2-1) defeated the Bristol Stateliners 4-0 at Boyce Cox Field Saturday night. The Elizabethton River Riders' pitching staff allowed only four hits and struck out 10. Centerfielder DJ Sullivan (Florence-Darlington Tech) homered in his season debut.

RHP Manuel Rodriguez (Bethany) started the game for the River Riders and went four innings and struck out six State Liners.

Scoring started for Elizabethton in the second inning when designated hitter Trey Hinton (Tusculum) singled to left field to score Sullivan from second, 1-0 River Riders.

Two runs were scored in the top of the fourth. Sullivan hit his first home run of the season to right field. The third run was scored by Catcher Reagan Guthrie (Regis) on an error by left fielder Grayson Preslar (UNC Asheville), 3-0 E-Town.

RHP Philip Berger (William Peace) made his second appearance of the season in the bottom of the fifth inning, striking out one and allowing only one hit in two innings pitched.

LHP Jullian Clavelle (Sacramento City) entered the game in the seventh inning and pitched 1.2 innings, striking out one. RHP Chase Lorg (Bethany) came in to finish the eighth inning and pitched the ninth. The winning and losing pitcher will be decided by Major League by noon the following day of the game.

The final run was scored in the top of the eighth inning when Hinton recorded his second RBI of the game and scored first baseman Eli Young (Gateway) from third, giving the River Riders their fourth and final run.

The River Riders will complete their road series against the Bristol State Liners tomorrow at 6 in a 7-inning contest before returning home to host the Kingsport Axmen Tuesday, June 8th.
