Missouri River Otters News Release
St. Charles, MO --- The Missouri River Otters of the United Hockey League are proud to announce they have signed former St. Louis Blues center Jim Montgomery for the upcoming hockey season.
Montgomery, 35, played more than 120 games in the National Hockey League, including a 67 game stint with the St. Louis Blues in 1993-94. The speedy center scored six goals and added 14 assists in his time with that organization. He also played for the Philadelphia Flyers, the Montreal Canadiens, the San Jose Sharks, and most recently, the Dallas Stars in 2002-03.
"It's one of the biggest signings this organization has ever had," River Otters Head Coach Kevin Kaminski said. "He brings great experience, tremendous ability, and perhaps most importantly, he brings respect and accountability."
Montgomery has been a prolific scorer in the American Hockey League with 451 points in 438 games. The 5'10'', 180 pound center exploded for 105 points with the Hershey Bears in 1995-96.
"I'm thrilled to be coming back to play hockey in front of the St. Louis fans," said Montgomery, who centered a line with Paul Kariya at the University of Maine. "I think I can bring great leadership, experience, skill, and the ability to create plays and generate offense. I'm hoping to bring a lot of excitement to the Family Arena."
Mike Shanahan Sr. owned the Blues when Montgomery played with that organization, and now he'll play on a team owned by Mike Shanahan Jr.
"It's very exciting to be working with the Shanahan family again," Montgomery said. "They're one of the top families in professional hockey, and I have no doubt this team will be successful under their leadership."
Montgomery's been an excellent playoff performer, as he helped lead the AHL's Philadelphia Phantoms to a Calder Cup Championship in 1997-98. During their 20-game title run, he fired home 13 goals and dished out 16 assists for 29 points.
The River Otters start their Colonial Cup quest Friday, October 15 at Kansas City, and the home opener is Saturday, October 23 against Quad City.
