River City Rascals News Release
Washington, PA - The River City Rascals selected five new players in the 2012 Frontier Draft, adding depth all around the diamond. They added two right-handed pitchers, depth behind the plate, and a utility infielder/outfielder.
The Rascals selected Josh Cruse out of Three Rivers Community College with the 12th pick in the first round. Cruse enters his rookie season in professional baseball and has the potential to add stability to the back end of the Rascals rotation in 2012. Cruse had 57 strikeouts in less than 71 innings of work while pitching for Three Rivers in 2009.
Two selections later with the final pick in the first round, the Rascals selected Roswell, Georgia native Dan Lazzaroni who played some collegiate ball at Southern Polytechnic State.
In the second round the Rascals had pick 20 and pick 28 that they used to select rookie catcher Zach Deutscher from North Park University and utility outfielder Aaron Oliver.
Deutscher hit .307 for his career at North Park University, hitting a career-high nine homeruns in 2011, helping lead the Vikings to its first championship since 1990.
Oliver comes from Los Angeles, California before attending Abilene Christian College. He had one of the most prolific seasons in ACU history as a junior when he earned South Central Region Player of the Year honors. He hit .405 while leading his team in hits (102), runs (79), doubles (22), triples (8), homeruns (14), RBI (65), and steals (27).
With the Rascals final pick in the third round, utility infielder R.J. Gundolff came off the board after playing 2011 in the Pecos League. He had just two hits in 12 at-bats with the White Sand Pupfish.
