Sacramento River Cats News Release
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Jermaine Mitchell scored his team's only run on a play at the plate in the third inning, but the River Cats ultimately lost to the visiting Las Vegas 51s by a score of 9-4 on Sunday afternoon at Raley Field.
The two teams began the game in a dead heat, with Jermaine Mitchell scoring an unassisted run in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game at one. Mitchell beat out a single to shallow right field, stole second, then scored from second base on a wild pitch. 51s pitcher, Scott Richmond, let one get away from him, allowing Mitchell to speed around third as Richmond covered home plate. The Las Vegas catcher, Paul Phillips, tracked down the ball and fired it back to Richmond right as Mitchell barreled into home, jarring the ball loose to score Sacramento's first run.
After the play at the plate, Las Vegas scored at least one run in five of the next six innings, including four in the sixth, to take a 9-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning. Sacramento cut in to the lead with a two-run double from Michael Taylor, but they couldn't complete the comeback attempt, falling by a score of 9-4.
River Cats starter Travis Banwart gave up three runs in five innings with four hits, four walks and three strikeouts for the loss. Each reliever that made an appearance after Banwart exited, allowed at least one run to score.
Mitchell finished 2-for-4 with a steal and a run scored, while Taylor paced the Cats offensively going 3-for-5 with three RBIs and his 12th home run. Grant Green was the only other River Cat to record multiple hits, finishing the game 2-for-3 with a walk.
Richmond notched his 10th win of the season, striking out seven in six innings, allowing one earned run. The 51s tallied 10 hits and nine walks in the nine-run effort.
The River Cats and 51s return to Raley Field on Monday Night at 7:05 p.m. for Seniors Eat Free presented by Cache Creek Casino Resort. Las Vegas will start lefty Brett Cecil (1-0, 2.38 ERA) against a River Cats starter who is to be determined.
