Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Carlos Corporan was 3-for-4 with three RBI, including a key two-run double in the seventh as the Oklahoma City RedHawks defeated the Round Rock Express 5-2 in Sunday night's Pacific Coast League action at The Dell Diamond. The Express (59-70) have lost three straight games for the first time since July 19-21. The RedHawks have won five of their last six and hold a 7-3 advantage in the season series.
Corporan's seventh-inning double snapped a 2-2 tie and proved to be the game-winning hit. He added an RBI double in the ninth, capping the scoring. Round Rock loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but Jose Valdez struck out Brad Nelson to end the game. It was the second straight night Valdez whiffed Nelson to end the game. The Express also left the bases loaded in the sixth.
Mark Hamburger, who began the season with the Express, earned the victory in relief. Hamburger (1-5) stranded a pair of inherited runners in the sixth and worked around an Julio Borbon leadoff single with a double play for a scoreless ninth; he also had one strikeout and walked one batter. Valdez recorded his 16th save. Starter Francisco Abad allowed two runs on six hits and a walk over five and one-third innings with three strikeouts.
Express starter Justin Grimm (2-2) shouldered the loss; he allowed four runs - three earned - on seven hits and a walk with three strikeouts over six and one-third innings. Corporan was the final batter he faced. Grimm worked ahead 0-2 and got in on Corporan's hands, but the RedHawks catcher was able to muscle a looping liner into shallow left for the game-winning hit.
Borbon homered on the first pitch of the bottom of the first inning. It was his ninth home run of the season, matching his career minor-league total entering the season (264 games). It was his first homer since July 29 at Memphis and first at The Dell Diamond since June 16 against Oklahoma City. Spilborghs singled to open the second and later scored on Koyie Hill's two-out single.
Oklahoma City tied the game in the fourth. Matt Downs led off with a single and later scored on Brad Snyder's one-out double. Snyder scored on a two-out Hernandez throwing error.
Borbon, Nelson and Ryan Spilborghs all had two-hit nights for the Express; Borbon enjoyed his fifth straight multiple-hit outing. Luis Hernandez doubled off the left-field wall with two outs in the ninth to extend his hitting streak to 15 games. Joey Butler (1-for-3) pushed his hitting streak to eight games.
Corporan had the lone multiple-hit effort for Oklahoma City. Five other RedHawks had one hit each.
Round Rock and Oklahoma City continue their four-game series Monday with a 7:05 p.m. CDT first pitch at The Dell Diamond. It will be dueling southpaws as Martin Perez (6-6, 4.46 ERA) gets the nod for the Express against RedHawks lefty Brett Oberholtzer (5-5, 5.29 ERA).
