San Diego Riptide News Release
SAN DIEGO - The Riptide added one player Monday and reassigned 10 others to the league office, cutting their roster down to 21 in time to play their first game of the season this weekend in Arkansas.
The league assigned 6-foot-4-inch, 290-pound offensive lineman Raul Gomez to the Riptide Monday, adding to an already formidable line that includes returning players Trevor Misipeka, Ryan Cuthbert and Brad Greetis, as well as newcomers Conner Stephens, Patrick Girardi and Oscar Grejada. Gomez, an Oceanside native and Oceanside High School graduate, played for four seasons at San Diego State from 1999-2002.
"We've got some talented quarterbacks here," said head coach and offensive guru Mouse Davis. "We need to make sure we've got the big guys up front to let the quarterbacks do their job."
Ten players were also reassigned to the league office on Monday in order to meet with the league-mandated deadline to have rosters cut to 21 players. The Riptide parted ways with WR/LB's Eddie Miller, Teddy Wilson and Scott Johnson, QB John Carnevali, WR/DB Alvin Owens, FB/LB Rodney Knight, DS Kevin Brown and linemen Johnie Warren, Nathan Burgey and Carlos Malfavon. The team also transferred lineman Mike Wessel and WR/DB Nakou McElrath to the Physically Unable to Perform list.
San Diego will take on the Arkansas Twisters to open its 2004 campaign on Saturday. The Riptide split two games with the Twisters in 2003, taking the first meeting 40-34 on a fourth-quarter comeback led by quarterback Kane Claunch, but dropping the second meeting the following week, 51-43.
The Riptide will then return home to kick off the exciting arena football action at the Sports Arena on Friday, April 9. The first 5,000 fans in attendance for the game will receive "Junior Seau" t-shirts, featuring the Riptide logo and Seau's name and number 55 emblazoned on the back, courtesy of Wells Fargo. Fans can get their tickets for "Junior Seau Night" at the Sports Arena for as little as $12 each at the Sports Arena box office, Ticketmaster, or by calling the Riptide offices at 866-RIPTIDE.
The Riptide will also be holding a press conference tomorrow, March 31, to unveil their new jerseys and discuss the upcoming season. Head Coach Mouse Davis and several Riptide players will be on hand for the event, which takes place at the Sports Arena at 1:00 p.m.
