Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings Rained Out

June 20, 2012 - North American League (NAmL)
Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

The Rio Grande WhiteWings have postponed Wednesday night's game with the Ft. Worth Cats until tomorrow due to inclement weather.

The WhiteWings and Cats will make up the game with a doubleheader featuring two scheduled 7-inning games on Thursday, June 21 at Harlingen Field.

Gates will open at 4:30 p.m. with the first pitch scheduled for 5:35 p.m.

The Ft. Worth Cats (16-9) lead the WhiteWings (15-10) by a game in the United League standings.

In other WhiteWings' news, the American Association's Lincoln Saltdogs have traded third baseman Leivi Ventura to Rio Grande Valley for three players to be named later.

Ventura, 28, is a familiar face in Harlingen, having led the WhiteWings with 20 home runs last year while hitting .323 with an impressive .990 OPS in 87 games. He also drove in 78 runs.

In 2010, Ventura came to the WhiteWings late in the season and hit .424 with 8 home runs in 119 plate appearances.

"Ventura helped the team win the division last year," said Rio Grande Valley manager Eddie Dennis. "He's a proven ballplayer; one of the best in the league.

"He just wanted to be here. He has a family here and wanted to be close to his fiance."

Before playing in the independent leagues Ventura spent four seasons in the New York Mets organization, advancing to the Port St. Lucie Mets (A) in 2008.

The Saltdogs will receive the three players of their choice of the WhiteWings roster following the conclusion of the 2012 season.

The Whitewings also signed Wander Perez to bolster their bullpen. The lefthander, 27, is a former Chicago White Sox farmhand who pitched 18 innings last season for the WhiteWings, fanning 21 batters while allowing 12 hits and six walks.
