Rio Grande Valley FC Toros News Release
SACRAMENTO, California - Rio Grande Valley F.C (7-11-5) faced Sacramento Republic FC (10-5-7) at Heart Health Park. Jonathan Ricketts scored his first of the season to put RGV ahead early. Roro Lopez equalized at the 89th minute to save a point for the home side.
RGV were able to control pace in the opening half by possessing 57% of the time, challenging Republic FC to fall back and defend their goal. The Toros made 36 final third entries as they shot four times, landing one shot on goal as the first 45 minutes expired. Both sides headed to the break deadlocked at 0-0 despite a tightly fought period. Sacramento was limited to four shots by Rio Grande, none landing on target.
Jonathan Ricketts sent a well-placed left footed strike from outside the box to make it 1-0 in favor of the Toros at the 53-minute mark, his first goal with RGV FC.
Rodrigo Lopez hit woodwork at the 75th minute as he tested Tyler Deric, the gently placed ball floated to the left top corner of the goal, bouncing clear off the crossbar. Lopez was positioned just outside the right corner of the 18-yard box, 1-0. The shot was the first on target of the night for Sacramento.
In a late-stage chance, Rodrigo Lopez delivered as he sent a header shot to the tight bottom left corner of the goal, past a diving Deric to equalize the match, 1-1, at the 89th minute.
As final time expired, Rio Grande earned a point against a Sacramento Republic side who were on a winning streak coming into this match. The Toros shot nine times, with two landing on target while Sacramento turned it around in the second half and tallied 11 shots, three on target to save the point at home against an RGV FC side that proved to have plenty of gas defensively once more.
The Toros continue their month-long road schedule as they prepare for a South Texas Derby showdown with San Antonio FC at Toyota Field on August 20. The action kicks off at 10:00pm CST. To see more matchday information, visit www.rgvfc.com.
