SD Loyal Beats First Place San Antonio 3-0 with Second Half Fireworks

SAN DIEGO - San Diego Loyal SC moved closer to first place with a 3-0 win against visiting San Antonio FC at a loud and vibrant Torero Stadium Saturday night.

Evan Conway, Grant Stoneman and Kyle Vassell scored for SD Loyal ( ‚¬â€¹ ‚¬â€¹14W-5L-4D) in the clash between the top two clubs in the Western Conference. Coach Landon Donovan's team earned three more points (46) to move within four of San Antonio (50) who remains the USL Championship points leader despite the loss.

SD Loyal opened up what was mostly a tightly-played match in the second half as both teams appeared to feel each other out through the first period.

In the second half, Donovan's team came out looking to attack, pressuring a San Antonio (16W-4L-2D, 50 points) team that didn't appear to be in a hurry to open up the scoring.

That's when the flurry of goals came for the home side after Tumi Moshobane and Kyle Vassell came on as substitutes in the 62nd minute. Conway opened the scoring when he put back his own blocked shot for his sixth goal this season. The SD Loyal forward got his head on a deflected cross but his shot was blocked by San Antonio goalkeeper Jordan Farr. The ball came right back to Conway, who sent it in with a right-footed shot.

Stoneman made it 2-0 when headed in a bending cross from Alejandro Guido that deflected off a San Antonio defender in the 72d minute. Vassell scored his team-leading 11th goal of the season five minutes later with a right-footed shot from near the top of the box on an assist by Nick Moon. He squeezed his low shot just inside the post after Farr got a finger on it but not enough to stop it.

With the win, SD Loyal earned its seventh victory in eight matches. Next up, SD Loyal will go for a club record fifth consecutive win against expansion side Monterey Bay FC on Wednesday, Aug. 10 (7 p.m.). Tickets to the match are available now at sdloyal.com/tickets.

SD Loyal has scored 10 goals via substitutes this season, more than any other team in the USL Championship.

Tonight's win marks the fourth in a row for SD Loyal, tying the club record set in June 2021.

SD Loyal has scored at least three goals for the tenth time in 23 games this season.

SD Loyal scored its 52nd goal of the season in 23 games, surpassing its total for the entire 2021 season (51 goals scored in 33 total matches played).

SD Loyal has scored in 21 of its 23 games this season, most in the USL Championship.
