The Orioles have been busy making trades and utilizing the Rule 5 draft to stockpile talent for the minor leagues. Here is a list of recent transactions that affect the Orioles Minor League system.
Former Baysox P Fredy Deza was outrighted to AAA-Norfolk and off of the O's 40-man roster. Deza pitched for Bowie in 2007 and compiled a 7-8 record in 36 games (16 starts) with a 4.43 ERA.- Baltimore declined a contract offer to former Baysox P Daniel Cabrera making him an unrestricted Major League free-agent. Cabrera went 48-59 with a 5.05 ERA in 147 career major league games over 5 seasons. He pitched in 5 games for Bowie during the 2004 season, compiling an 0-1 record with a 2.63 ERA. He struckout 35 batters in his 5 games.- Baltimore traded major league catcher Ramon Hernandez to Cincinnati for major league INF/OF Ryan Freel and two minor league players: INF Brandon Waring and INF Justin Turner.
Waring was a 7th round pick out of Wofford in 2007. He has hit 40 HR's and batted .286 in 188 minor league games. He hit 20 HR's for Single-A Dayton and started the Midwest League All-Star Game at 3rd base. Turner was the Reds' 7th round selection in 2006 and split the 2008 season between Single-A Sarasota and Double-A Chattanooga. He batted a combined .298 in 111 games and then hit .337 for Peoria in the Arizona Fall League. In his pro career, he has combined to hit .310 in 294 games.
In the MLB Rule 5 draft conducted at the Baseball Winter Meetings last week, the Orioles selected shortstop Robert Valido from the Chicago White Sox (AA Birmingham roster) and RHP Josh Perrault from Washington (AA Harrisburg roster). They also selected RHP Andrew Barb from the Seattle Mariners. Barb didn't play in the Mariners' system in 2008. The 6'3" 190 lb pitcher is 24 years old and in his last game action in 2007, went 3-1 with a 2.33 ERA in 32 games for Wisconsin (Single-A). He had 10 saves and 55 K's in 38 2/3 innings for Wisconsin. He notched 18 saves for Single-A Lakewood (Phillies) in 2006 and posted a 2.21 ERA and 71 K's in 61 innings. He's a possible candidate to start the 2009 season in Bowie's bullpen. Catching Up With The PastSome former Bowie Baysox players have recently signed on with other organizations this off-season.
Here is the current free-agent tracker and where they have ended up:INF Luis Hernandez (Kansas City); OF Darnell McDonald (Cincinnati); C Raul Chavez (Pittsburgh); Freddie Bynum (Washington); Willie Harris (Washington - 2-year Major League deal); Augie Ojeda (Arizona - Major League deal); Jorge Julio (Milwaukee - Major League deal).
