
Riley Riddell joins Snakes

COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Columbus Cottonmouths of the SPHL have announced the signing of centerman Riley Riddell to a contract today.
Riddell, 24, already has 48 games of experience under his belt this season with Waywayseecappo of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League, where he led his team and was sixth in the league in goals (30) and also led his team in assists (28), points (58), and penalty minutes (144). Riddell spent time last season with three different ECHL teams in Idaho, Atlantic City, and Wheeling. In a combined 42 games with the three clubs, Riddell scored five goals and added four assists. Prior to last season, Riddell played collegiately for Bemidji State University in Minnesota. He scored 34 points (13G, 21A) in 2003-04 en route to being named to the All-CHA Second Team. He was named the CHA Rookie of the Year his freshman year of 2001-02 and was named the CHA Rookie of the Week on four separate occasions. He ranked second among all rookies that season in points per game with 32 points (14G, 18A) in 35 games played. Ironically, he has already scored three goals in the Huntsville Havoc's home Von Braun Center as a member of Bemidji State in their games against the University of Alabama at Huntsville. During the 2000-01 season, Riddell was named MVP of the Omaha Lancers of the USHL, leading his team to the league championship that season. In 1999-00, Riddell played alongside current Cottonmouths Mat Ponto and Ryan Rutz in Camrose of the Alberta Junior Hockey League, leading the league in scoring en route to being named to the AJHL All-Star Team as well as league MVP. He also shares the same hometown of Camrose, Alberta as current Cottonmouth Tim Green.
"My guys have been really clicking lately and judging from what I have seen in practice so far I think Riley will fall right into place," said Cottonmouths head coach and general manager Jerome Bechard.
The Snakes travel to Knoxville, Tenn. this weekend for a pivotal game against the first-place Knoxville Ice Bears. The next home game is Thursday, February 9 at 7:30 PM EST when Columbus entertains the Florida Seals.
