Kitchener Rangers News Release

Tobias Rieder scored twice for the Kitchener Rangers in a 5-3 loss to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds on Sunday afternoon. Matt Puempel recorded his team-leading 32nd goal of the season for the Rangers, while captain Ryan Murphy set up all three Kitchener tallies.

The Greyhounds opened the scoring, jumping on a first period power play opportunity. Brandon Alderson collected a rebound in front of the Rangers net and lifted it high over the glove hand of starter John Gibson. The veteran winger's 27th of the season was assisted by Jared McCann and Colin Miller.

Just over a minute later Kitchener capitalized on a man-advantage, pulling even at 1-1. Sault Ste. Marie netminder Matt Murray turned aside Radek Faksa's attempt, but Matt Puempel corralled the rebound, shovelling it over the goal line for his team leading 32nd of the season and third in as many games. Captain Ryan Murphy also assisted on the play.

The Rangers took a one goal lead with less than five minutes to play in the first with another power play tally. German import Tobias Rieder extended his recent point streak to a third game, chipping a high shot over Murray soared just under the crossbar. Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Joshua Leivo and Murphy were credited with the helpers on Rieder's 26th of the year.

Rieder's second of the game lifted Kitchener to a 3-1 lead before the first intermission. The Edmonton Oilers draft pick redirected Murphy's point shot past Murray for his 27th goal of the season. Leivo collected his second point of the game with an assist on the play.

The Greyhounds led shots on goal 17-14 after the opening 20 minutes of play.

The score remained 3-1 after a scoreless second period. Sault Ste. Marie continued to out-shoot the Rangers 14-12 through the middle frame.

Greyhounds cut into the Rangers lead with a 4-on-4 goal early in the third. Miller cut the Kitchener lead to one with his 20th of the season, just 47 seconds into the period. McCann earned his second point of the night with a helper. The second assist was credited to Andrew Fritsch.

Import forward Sergey Tolchinsky pulled Sault Ste. Marie even with less than seven minutes remaining in the third period, pushing the puck past Gibson for his 26th of the year. Alderson and Nick Cousins assisted on the play.

A short-handed goal put the Greyhounds ahead 4-3 with just over two minutes to play. McCann sailed a shot by Gibson's blocker to collect his third point of the afternoon and 20th goal of the season. Miller also earned his third point of the game with a helper.

Alderson added an unassisted empty net goal in the final minute to secure a 5-3 Sault Ste. Marie win.

Each team fired 15 shots on goal in the final period of play, but the Greyhounds finished with a 46-41 overall advantage on the shot clock.

With the win, the Greyhounds take a 2-1 lead in the four game season series, which comes to a close next Saturday, March 16 in Sault Ste. Marie.
