Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
FRISCO, TX - The Hooks rallied from a five-run deficit Friday night, but their effort went by the wayside as Frisco pushed across an unearned tally in the 10th to win 7-6 before an announced crowd of 11,612 at Dr Pepper Ballpark.
The Riders (13-7, 42-48) batted around in the third inning, knocking Hooks starter Adrian Houser out of the game. Nick Williams sealed the surge with a two-run double to right-center off Chris Cotton, staking Frisco to a 6-1 advantage.
Cotton rebounded by retiring 10 of the next 11 men he faced.
Corpus Christi's answer came in the fifth against Edwar Cabrera. Teoscar Hernandez and Jon Kemmer reached to begin the inning, setting the stage for A.J. Reed's RBI single. One out later, Conrad Gregor belted a three-run bomb onto the berm in right field, pulling the Hooks to within a run.
Jio Mier worked a walk, stole second and then scored in the aftermath of Chang-Jong Moon's infield single. Riders shortstop Drew Robinson's throw to first base sailed into foul ground, enabling Mier to scamper home for the tying run.
Jandel Gustave was brilliant in relief for the Hooks (10-11, 58-33), striking out a season-high four batters over two shutout frames. Travis Ballew worked a perfect ninth before giving way to Reymin Guduan.
Trever Adams opened the Frisco 10th with a base hit to left field. Drew Robinson laid down a sac bunt but Guduan failed in his attempt to retire the leading runner, putting a pair on base. Preston Beck followed and was unsuccessful in his bid to get a bunt down, fouling off strike three. Luis Mendez then hit a chopper to first base and Gregor's throw to second bounced into left field, sending Adams home for the winning run.
The Hooks, who squandered a bases-loaded chance in the eighth, stranded 13 runners. Hernandez began the Corpus Christi 10th with a single but was promptly doubled off first base on Kemmer's deep drive to right field.
The Riders shoot for the sweep Saturday night. Michael Feliz (2-2, 3.34) stands in their way. The Hooks will be opposed by lefty Frank Lopez (3-2, 3.30). First pitch 7:05.
