Columbus, Ohio- Jacob Cepis snapped a 1-1 tie with 2:07 left in the third period and the RoughRiders went on to defeat the host Ohio Jr. Blue Jackets 3-1 Saturday night.
Cepis skated in alone and backhanded the puck home to give the Riders a 2-1 lead just seconds after Rider goaltender Pat McGann (15 saves) kept Ohio from taking the lead by stopping a Tim Hall penalty shot.
Kevin Wehrs' shorthanded empty net goal with 46.9 seconds left in the game put Ohio away. The Blue Jackets were already on the power play when they emptied the net to create a 6-on-4 advantage with just under one minute remaining. Wehrs, however, snuffed out Ohio's hopes for a late equalizer by firing puck from behind his own net all the way down the ice and into the gaping goal at the other end.
The late fireworks capped off a game that was scoreless for better than two full periods. The Riders did not score the first goal of the night until Andy Miele buried a rebound at 2:55 of the third during a Cedar Rapids two man advantage.
The Blue Jackets knotted the score at one just over three and a half minutes later when Donnie Hallmark backhanded the puck past McGann from the left wing circle.
