Inland Empire 66ers News Release
San Bernardino, CA- Rancho Cucamonga's John Richy and a pair of relievers stymied the Inland Empire 66ers in a 2-1 pitchers' duel at San Manuel Stadium on Saturday. Johan Mieses two-run homer was the only damage in the run column against the Sixers trio of Jordan Kipper, Harrison Cooney and Alan Busenitz as the Quakes downed Inland Empire for the second straight contest.
The 66ers touched Richy (8-3) in the bottom of the first inning when Bo Way doubled down the right field line to lead off the frame and came home two batters later on Eric Aguilera's double down the same line. It was Aguilera's 30th double of the year and his 65th RBI; it was also the only scoring the 66ers would muster.
Kipper (4-7) pitched well for the 66ers allowing four hits in five innings with just one walk allowed and a season-best eight strikeouts. The righty from Phoenix, AZ was stung by Mieses' shot to left field in the third inning to give the Quakes (54-43, 13-14) at 2-1 lead. It was Mieses' fifth homer of the season.
Richy (7.1IP, 5H, 1ER, 1BB, 5Ks) was relieved by former 66er Daniel Tillman in the eighth with one out following Way's bunt single. The righty was on the mound when Way was caught stealing for out number two in the frame and then retired Mike Fish on a bounce out to short to escape with the lead.
The 66ers (47-49, 12-14) faced Quakes closer and Riverside, CA native Caleb Dirks in the ninth. The righty walked Aguilera on four pitches to open the frame but struck the next two batters out and coaxed a ground out to short off the bat of Roberto Baldoquin to end the game. Dirks now has three saves in four chances. Mieses had a single to go along with his homer for the Quakes' lone multi-hit game. Way was 2-for-3 for the Sixers and was hit-by-a-pitch.
Cooney tossed three scoreless frames out of the pen for Inland Empire allowing just a hit and a walk while fanning two. Busenitz allowed a hit and struck out a batter in his lone inning of work.
The 66ers will try to split the four-game series on Sunday at 5:05 pm. The contest can be heard live at 66ers.com.
