Richmond Kickers News Release
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The Richmond Kickers (6-8-7) finished their regular-season series against MLS affiliate New England Revolution II 2-1-1 after falling 3-1 in Gillette Stadium, Friday night.
Early, in the 3rd minute, Richmond held possession of the ball in their own half, Zaca Moran teed up for a long-range, weighted, diagonal-pass that fell perfectly in front of Jonathan Bolanos. Sprinting into the box after his first touch, Bolanos cut inside, beating Connor Presley and drilled a powerful shot towards the near post and into the goal.
In the 21st minute, New England's Justin Rennicks received the ball outside of the Richmond box and let a shot off, but Akira Fitzgerald reacted quickly and got behind the shot to keep the goal safe. Several minutes later, New England Revolution II sent a dangerous ball into the six-yard box that Jalen Crisler cleared out for a corner kick, safely dispatching the Revs II attacking play.
About 10 minutes later, Jake Rozhansky, with the ball at the edge of the Richmond box, lofted a ball into Rennicks who won the header which he flicked into the goal behind him, bringing New England Revolution II level with Richmond at 1-1.
Shortly after walking back onto the pitch from the halftime break, New England had good fortune after a heavy touch from Damian Rivera was intercepted by an Ivan Magalhães tackle, but the ball took an awkward deflection back off of Rivera's knee, catching Fitzgerald off-guard and giving Revs II the lead.
After a quick-paced 20 minutes of back-and-forth possessions for both sides, Richmond introduced Oalex Anderson and Denzo Ulysse to get some fresh legs on the right side. Soon after, around the 79th minute, Nil Vinyals received a pass around the half line and flicked it behind his back to Terzaghi who received the pass in stride.
Terzaghi, surging through the middle of the New England half, jockeyed off a defender and laid off a bouncing pass into Anderson who took a touch and ripped a shot at the goal but it went over the crossbar.
With time winding down, Richmond went all-out on the attack, employing the physicality and height of Hernan Gonzalez and Nathan Aune to win aerial duels in more advanced areas of the pitch. With five minutes of extra time, Noel Buck received a ball in a wide area of the Richmond box and let loose a low shot which found the back of the net to make the scoreline 3-1 in favor of the hosts.
Now, Richmond returns home for their first match at City Stadium in nearly a month. The next match will be against Toronto FC II for the second matchup of the 2021 regular season. Richmond had previously played the MLS-affiliate side earlier in the season in Toronto, traveling without several key starters because of international travel restrictions. Kickoff for the homecoming is set for September 25 at 6:30 p.m.
