Kalamazoo Kings News Release
Chris Spigner struck out 11 in 7 1/3 innings as the Richmond Roosters handed the Kings their first shutout of the season, 3-0 at McBride Stadium.
Richmond got on the board with two out in the first off Kings starter Jason Biddlestone. Phil Willingham singled and Drew Miller followed with a walk. Key Voshell singled to left, scoring Willingham for a 1-0 lead. Richmond got another in the fifth after a walk to Miller and back-to-back singles by Voshell and Pete Pirman, the latter scoring Miller. The following inning, the Roosters added an unearned run when Blake Leverett reached on an error by first-baseman Steve Hindman, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and came home on a sac fly by Jeremiah Klosterman off reliever John Huizinga.
The Kings had their opportunities against Spigner (2-0), twice leaving the bases loaded. Pat Tingley pitched a perfect ninth for his second save.
Biddlestone (0-1) lasted five-plus innings, before giving way to Huizinga, who threw three perfect innings in relief. Matt Kent was 2 for 3 with a double and a walk for Kalamazoo.
