Richmond Kickers News Release
RICHMOND, VA - (Monday, November 8, 2004) - The United Soccer Leagues announced at this year's Annual Operations Meeting last week that the Richmond Kickers are the 2004 A-League recipient of the 'Fair Play Award.' Awarded to the team with the least number of disciplinary points at the end of the season, this year marks the first year that the Kickers have received this award.
"The team prides itself on discipline, commitment and focus," says Richmond Kickers Head Coach Leigh Cowlishaw. "We were able to considerably reduce the amount of needless cautions and minimize suspensions. With a small squad, to have everyone available each week is vital to our success."
The Richmond Kickers have been honored with several awards over the seasons. Included are 2000 USL A-League Organization of the Year Award, 1998 Progress Award, and 1995 USL Franchise of the Year Award. In 2002, the Kickers were doubly honored as both the club and one of its former coaches were inducted into the USL Hall of Fame. As a member of the USL for 10 or more years, the Kickers were honored in the 10+ Club category. In addition, Kickers former coach Dennis Viollet was honored in the Coaches category.
"This award marks a great achievement for our organization," comments General Manager Paul Sterbenz, "It is a credit to our players and also to our coaching staff for demonstrating a well-disciplined and hard working culture within the team. Win or lose, our belief is that you play with class and this team exemplified that at the highest level."
Kickers President Re-Elected to A-League Executive Committee
Richmond Kickers President, Tom Depcrynski, was re-elected to the A-League Executive Committee for an additional two-year term. A member of the A-League Executive Committee for the past four years, Depcrynksi has been a consistent voice behind the scenes of the league. His continued passion for the club and the sport has led the Kickers to achieve success on and off the field.
The A-League boasts 12 teams from coast-to-coast in the US and Canada and is the highest level in the United Soccer Leagues (USL) system. For more information please check out our website at www.RichmondKickers.com.
