August 27, 2022 - Eastern League (EL)
Akron RubberDucks News Release

Summary

Gavin Williams punched out eight, but the Richmond Flying Squirrels score seven after his departure to beat the Akron RubberDucks 8-4 on Saturday night at Canal Park.

Turning Point

Already holding a 3-1 lead, Richmond looked for some late insurance. Three-straight Flying Squirrels worked walks to open the ninth before Shane Matheny doubled off the wall in center to make it 5-1 Richmond. After Akron got two outs and looked to escape the jam, but Brett Auerbach launched a three-run home run to make it 8-1 Richmond.

Mound Presence

Gavin Williams got the start for Akron and was nearly flawless in his five innings of work. Williams allowed just one run on two hits and two walks while striking out eight. Eli Lingos followed with two-thirds of an inning allowing two runs. Carlos Vargas followed with an inning and a third scoreless. Randy Labaut tossed two innings allowing five runs while striking out four.

Duck Tales

After Richmond took the early lead, the RubberDucks answered right back in the bottom of the third when Jose Tena singled home Daniel Schneemann to tie the game at 1-1. Akron looked to rally back in the ninth when Jhonkensy Noel walked before Micah Pries singled to put runners on first and second with no outs. Angel Martinez hit a chopper to third, which was thrown into right to allow Noel to score and make it 8-2 Richmond. A passed ball on the very next pitch allowed Pries to scamper home and make it 8-3 Flying Squirrels. Two batters later, Raynel Delgado brought home Martinez with an RBI groundout to make it 8-4 Richmond, but that is as close as the RubberDucks would get.
