Evansville BlueCats News Release

EVANSVILLE, IN: The Evansville BlueCats are pleased to announce that defensive back/kick returner Richard Johnson has been named Special Teams Player of the Week by the league for his Week 3 performance against the Lexington Horsemen. Last week against the Horsemen, Johnson had two kick returns for 62 yards, including a 57-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the first quarter. The 57-yard kick return is a new Evansville BlueCats team record, and is one yard shy of the UIF league record of 58-yards set by former Sioux City running back Fred Jackson in 2005. Johnson's 57-yard kick return is easily the longest kickoff return in the league so far this season. Also starting at defensive back, Johnson also recorded 2.5 tackles and a pass break up in the game against Lexington.

Richard Johnson played college football at Virginia Tech and was a member of Virginia Tech's 2004 ACC Championship team that played in the Sugar Bowl vs. Auburn. He played wide receiver and returned punts and kicks for the Hokies during his 4-year career. As a sophomore in 2001, he returned a kickoff 91 yards for his first collegiate touchdown on the road at Miami. He led the team in kick return yards as a freshman and sophomore, and finished his sophomore season 4th on the team with 754 all-purpose yards, behind only future NFL players Kevin Jones, Lee Suggs, and Bryan Randall. Last season, Johnson played indoor football in another league.

Coming out of high school, Johnson was listed as the #5 wide receiver and #28 overall prospect in the nation. Johnson played at quarterback, running back, wide receiver, free safety, strong safety, cornerback, and returned kicks during his career at Milford Mill High School in Maryland where he accumulated 41 career passing touchdowns, 28 rushing touchdowns, and 3 kick return touchdowns. He earned All-Baltimore-Metro and All-State honors as a junior and senior. Johnson was scouted and placed by the coaches and staff of the indoor football scouting bureau.

This Saturday, Richard Johnson and the rest of the Evansville BlueCats travel to Rockford, Illinois, to take on the Rock River Raptors. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:05pm.
