HARLINGEN- Leivi Ventura hit his first home run since returning to Rio Grande Valley 17 games ago and Luis Chirinos enjoyed a quality start as the WhiteWings defeated the McAllen Thunder, 8-3, Wednesday night.

Ventura, who hit 20 home runs last season to lead the WhiteWings (25-19), hit a 3-run shot to left at Harlingen Field in the first inning off righthander Alexei Perez (2-2) to give Rio Grand Valley a 3-0 lead.

And though former WhiteWing Miguel Alfonzo hit his first homer for the Thunder (16-30) since being traded to McAllen on June 23 off Luis Chirinos (6-3) in the second inning to make the score 3-2, the WhiteWings would continue to pound Perez for 10 hits and eight runs in five plus innings.

Chirinos now is tied for the North American Baseball League lead in victories.

Clint Bowker threw three scoreless innings of relief for Rio Grande Valley to earn his first professional save.

The WhiteWings are currently in second place in the NABL's Southern Division, trailing Edinburg by 1 1/2 games. They host the Thunder tonight at 7:05 p.m. on Los Fresnos Community Night, where mayor Polo Navarez will throw out the first pitch.
