Revs Trade Long Balls with Patriots But Drop Opener by a Run
September 17, 2015 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release
The York Revolution used a pair of long balls to tie the game in the sixth inning, but Somerset took advantage of its second homer of the game to take the lead in the eighth en route to a 5-4 victory at Santander Stadium on Thursday night, kicking off the final series of the regular season. York will look to even things on Friday night at 6:30 p.m.
Somerset drew first blood in the back-and-forth contest, plating a first inning run on a two-out bloop single to right-center by Matt Fields.
York answered in the bottom of the third with a pair of runs to take a 2-1 lead. After James Simmons worked a one-out walk, Eric Patterson singled to left on a perfect hit-and-run for the Revs' first hit of the night, putting runners at the corners. Wilson Valdez then executed his third squeeze bunt of the season, bringing home Simmons on the sacrifice to tie the score. Andres Perez followed with an RBI single off the Arch Nemesis for a 2-1 lead, adding to the league lead with his 85th RBI of the season.
Somerset jumped back ahead in the fourth on a two-run double to left by James Skelton with two outs for a 3-2 lead. Greg Hopkins added a leadoff homer in the sixth as the Patriots' lead grew to 4-2.
The Revs provided a thunderous response in the bottom of the sixth as Telvin Nash clobbered a missile down the left field line for a leadoff homer, his 11th of the season. With two outs, Nick Ferdinand launched a towering solo shot of his own to left-center, also his 11th homer, tying the game at 4-4.
It would remain that way until the top of the eighth when Fields connected on a leadoff homer of his own, also to left-center, giving Somerset the 5-4 lead. Fields has totaled five home runs in his first 12 games with the Patriots, and also has 12 RBI after driving in two in Thursday's contest.
York threatened in the bottom of the eighth, loading the bases against setup man Andrew Carignan with a pair of walks and a single by Luis De La Cruz, but Carignan rebounded to strike out Ferdinand and retire Simmons on a ground out, leaving the bases loaded.
Jon Hunton allowed a two-out single to Perez in the ninth, but rolled a game-ending fielder's choice for his 32nd save of the season.
Daniel Sattler (8-2) picked up the win out of Somerset's bullpen with a 1-2-3 frame in the seventh. Revs lefty Ron Schreurs (4-1) suffered his first loss, allowing Fields' homer in the eighth after retiring the side in order in the seventh.
The starters took no-decisions as York lefty Frank Gailey gave up three runs over five innings. Kramer Sneed, making his Atlantic League debut, was charged with four runs over six innings for Somerset. Both starters walked four and struck out four.
Notes: The loss snaps a streak of eight consecutive wins for the Revs in starts made by Gailey. York falls to 14-5 in one-run decisions at home. The Revs have belted a league-leading 25 home runs in 16 games in September. Valdez owns three of York's four squeeze bunts on the season, and with two sacrifices in Thursday's game, now holds a club record 46 sac bunts in his York career and a record 26 this season, a total that leads the league. Ferdinand's sixth inning homer extended his hitting streak to six games, the longest current streak on the team. Perez (2-for-4) now owns a five-game streak after posting his team-leading 43rd multi-hit game of the year. York righty Cody Scarpetta (3-5, 3.58) faces Somerset right-hander Mickey Storey (11-3, 2.59) on Friday at 6:30 p.m. It is Girls Night Out presented by the YWCA, and a Guaranteed Win Friday presented by Commonwealth Connections Academy. Tickets are on sale at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
