Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
Waldorf, MD - The final game of the month of August had the potential of being the most important Blue Crabs game of the season, and it lived up to the hype. A controversial ending led to a pivotal Revolution win, 6-4.
York struck first when Isaias Tejeda brought a run home on a fielder's choice off the Blue Crabs' starter Dusten Knight. Knight rebounded nicely and allowed just one hit through his first four innings while striking out eight batters.
Southern Maryland responded with a two spot in the bottom of the first. Each of the first three Blue Crabs to come to the plate came through with a base hit, and Jon Griffin gave the good guys the lead, 2-1.
Knight allowed just four hits in seven innings, but a Telvin Nash three run homer in the fifth tipped the scales in favor of York. Knight was magnificent in the outing, his 12 strikeouts set a season best for a Blue Crab, and the dozen strikeouts are tied for the second most strikeouts by an Atlantic Leaguer this season, and singlehandedly tied the most strikeouts by a Blue Crabs opponent this season in a game.
The Blue Crabs responded immediately in the bottom of the fifth with a pair of runs as Griffin and Tony Thomas each picked up an RBI. Over the next two innings, James Dykstra (L, 2-4) recorded four strikeouts, setting a season high for a Blue Crabs opponent.
In the top of the ninth controversy ensued. With runners on first and second a dropped third strike occurred, and the ALPB/MLB rule changes allowing a runner to steal first base collided with the traditional rule disallowing a runner to advance on a dropped third strike with first base occupied. Mat Latos then entered the game, and a line drive bounced off of him and got into the outfield, leading to a 6-4 Revs win.
The Blue Crabs will return home tomorrow, Sunday September 1st for game four of a four game set with the York Revolution, with a special 6:35 p.m. first pitch.
