
Revs Midfielder Clint Dempsey Wins 2006 Honda Player of the Year Award

Los Angeles - New England Revolution midfielder/forward Clint Dempsey today won the 2006 Honda Player of the Year Award, which for the last 16 years has honored the best player on the U.S. National Soccer Team as chosen by the American sports media.
Dempsey was presented the key to a new Honda Ridgeline truck during the annual Honda Player of the Year Award luncheon, which was held at The Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles.
Dempsey received a total of 237 points in voting by 207 sports journalists who participated in this year's balloting. Kasey Keller finished second with a total of 184 points, and Brian McBride finished third with 127 points. A player received three points for each first-place vote, two points for each second-place vote, and one point for each third-place vote. In order to be eligible for the Honda Player of the Year Award, a player must play in a minimum of three (3) games for the U.S. National Team during the calendar year.
Dempsey scored four goals in nine games with the U.S. National Team in 2006, including one of the U.S. goals in the 2006 FIFA World Cup, and this year finished in a tie for the team lead in goals scored. Since his debut with the National Team at the end of 2004, he has played in a total of 23 games and scored six goals for the United States. The 23-year-old midfielder is in his third season with the Revolution. He has scored in three of his last four matches with the Revs and has seven goals on the season.
Among those also in attendance were previous Honda Player of the Year Award winners Landon Donovan, Cobi Jones, Alexi Lalas, Thomas Dooley and Hugo Perez, as well as other current and former players and coaches such as Steve Sampson, Mauricio Cienfuegos, Christopher Sullivan, Frank Yallop and Rick Davis.
Dempsey and the Revs return to action on Saturday, Oct. 7, when they travel to play league-leader D.C. United in Washington. Kickoff will be 7:30 p.m., and the game will be televised live on WSBK TV38, the first-ever Revolution broadcast on the channel. The game will also be heard on the radio at WEEI 850 AM (English) and WJDA 1300 AM (Spanish).
The Revs close out the regular-season at home on Saturday, Oct. 14, when they host the Columbus Crew at Gillette Stadium. The 7:30 p.m. kickoff is also "Fan Appreciation Night," where Revs fans in attendance will have a chance to win the shirts straight off the backs of the 18 Revs players dressed for the game, as well as several other exciting prizes.
