York Revolution News Release
Pedro Liriano and three relievers combined on the second one-hitter in York Revolution history, and Cody Johnson doubled and homered to power the offense in a 4-1 win over the Sugar Land Skeeters in game two of Wednesday's twinbill in front of 4,828 fans at Constellation Field. The two teams will wrap up the series on Thursday night before the Revs return to the east coast to take on the Lancaster Barnstormers in the final series of the season's first half this weekend.
Sugar Land's only hit came on an infield single by Adam Godwin leading off the bottom of the first inning. After reaching on a fielder's choice, Jeff Dominguez later scored an unearned run on a ground ball to give the Skeeters an early 1-0 lead, but Revs pitchers locked it down from there.
Liriano retired his final ten batters faced, giving up just the one hit and the unearned run in his four innings.
Meanwhile, the Revs rallied for three runs to take the lead in the top of the third. Eric Patterson laid down his first bunt hit of the season and Wilson Batista followed with a single to left to set the table. With two outs and runners at the corners, Johnson nailed a double to the gap in right-center, driving in a pair of runs to give York the lead. Andres Perez followed with a ground single to right, and while the throw arrived home ahead of Johnson, the Revs' designated hitter knocked the ball loose from catcher Koby Clemens' glove, scoring to make it 3-1.
Johnson homered to left field in the top of the fifth to provide the rest of the scoring.
Stephen Penney (3-2) fired a perfect fifth inning out of the Revolution bullpen, which also received scoreless innings from Michael Wuertz and Juan Rincon (13th save).
The only other one-hitter in Revolution history also came at Constellation Field, when Chris Waters went the distance in a 6-0 victory on September 18, 2012. It is the first combined one-hitter in franchise history.
York snaps a season-high-tying four-game losing streak with the win, just their second in nine matchups with the Skeeters on the season. Sugar Land's magic number to clinch the first half title remains three, owning a 2.5-game lead over Somerset.
The Revs will send Corey Thurman (4-6, 4.70) to the mound in Thursday's finale against Adam Miller (1-3, 3.57). First pitch is scheduled for 8:05 p.m. ET, and Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, YorkRevolution.com, and on the Shoutcast phone app (YorkRevs) beginning at 7:45 p.m. ET with Darrell Henry on the call.
FRUSTRATING TRIP CONTINUES WITH LOSS IN DOUBLEHEADER OPENER
Eric Patterson's first inning leadoff home run gave the York Revolution a promising start, but it was all Sugar Land Skeeters the rest of game one, handing the Revs a 6-1 loss in the opener of Wednesday's doubleheader at Constellation Field.
Patterson's leadoff home run was his second of the season, taking over the team lead with 12 home runs overall, but it was the only run surrendered by Sugar Land starter Gilbert De La Vara (2-0) in five innings of work. The lefty has now allowed just one run in 14.0 innings over three starts since returning from injury.
Sugar Land struck for four runs in the bottom of the second to take control. Russ Mitchell gave the Skeeters the lead with a two-run homer to left, his first of the year, while RBI singles from Steve Moss and Travis Scott contributed as well.
Sugar Land scored an unearned run in the fifth on an infield single by Adam Godwin, and one more run in the sixth on an RBI single by Eduardo Perez.
York starter Brett Tomko (2-6) suffered the loss, but hung in to pitch all six innings, saving the Revs' bullpen for the second game.
