(York, PA): The York Revolution and York County Industrial Development Authority (YCIDA) announced today that the American Cancer Society and York County's Child Abuse Prevention Outreach Committee (through the York County Office of Children, Youth and Families) are the winners of this year's competition for free use of Sovereign Bank Stadium, as well as marketing and financial support from the Revolution and YCIDA. The grant competition is in its third year and this year drew nine applications.
Revolution President Eric Menzer congratulated the winners and said "we're pleased to again work with the YCIDA, which owns Sovereign Bank Stadium, to make our great home available to several worthwhile non-profit organizations in the community at no charge. This is just one part of delivering on the promise that was made when the stadium was built that it would have uses well beyond our baseball team."
Through the winning application from the Child Abuse Prevention Outreach Committee the stadium will host a Child Abuse Awareness Family Day on June 15. "This project involves multiple organizations coming together for a cause that is in the forefront of our state's consciousness" said Menzer. "We're happy to be able to make a contribution to child abuse awareness and prevention through the marketing package we are contributing to this event."
The American Cancer Society won free use of the White Rose Hall at the stadium, and will use the room to host an enrollment session for a major national cancer study (CPS-3) being conducted by the Society. "The ACS application was a winner because it will make enrollment in this important and broad-ranging study accessible to inner-city residents who can walk or use convenient public transportation to participate by virtue of it being held here," said Menzer.
The grant contest includes financial awards from the YCIDA to support the two events. The YCIDA initiated the competition two years ago to increase community visibility of Sovereign Bank Stadium and provide for its maximum use for public and community purposes. The initiative has been extremely successful, as in 2012 Sovereign Bank Stadium hosted an event of some type every single weekend from the first weekend in April until the second weekend in December.
