New England Revolution News Release
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - U.S. Soccer has announced that New England Revolution Under-18 captain Scott Caldwell (Braintree, Mass.) is part of the 18-man roster named by U.S. Under-18 Men's National Team head coach Mike Matkovich for an upcoming trip to Sydney, Australia for the Australian Youth Olympic Festival. The U.S. will face Chile (Jan. 15), China (Jan. 16) and the host-nation Australia (Jan. 18) in a four-day span toward the end of the trip.
Caldwell, 17, is the first-ever captain of the Revolution U18 team, which was formed along with an Under-16 team as part of the New England Revolution Youth Development Academy in early 2008. The midfielder has made three appearances for the Revs U18s, starting all three matches at the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Winter Showcase in early December. Caldwell, who graduated from Florida's Bradenton Academy in May 2008 and will begin attending the University of Akron this spring, notched one goal at the showcase, scoring the Revolution's opening goal in a 3-2 victory over Washington Premier FC.
The Sydney trip, which runs from Jan. 9-19, will mark the U.S. U18s first international event under Matkovich, who was hired in late 2008. All 18 players selected for the competition were chosen directly from the 72-player MegaCamp that was held from Dec. 28-Jan. 4 at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.
The Australian Youth Olympic Festival is a biannual event for aspiring Olympians between the ages of 13 and 19. There will be 23 countries participating in 21 different sports throughout the games.
The Revolution senior team opens the 2009 season on Saturday, March 21, when the club travels to play the San Jose Earthquakes at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Revs open their home slate on Saturday, April 4, when they host FC Dallas. Season tickets are available by calling 1-877-GET-REVS.
Both the Revs' U18 and U16 teams will return to the field in mid-February, when both academy squads will play road matches against the New York Red Bulls on Saturday, Feb. 14 and the Baltimore Bays on Sunday, Feb. 15.
