Revolution to face United in Eastern Conference Championship
November 2, 2006 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
New England Revolution News Release
For the fifth time in five seasons, the New England Revolution will play for the MLS Eastern Conference Championship when they travel to face D.C. United on Sunday, Nov. 5, at 4 p.m. at RFK Stadium in Washington in a game that will be televised nationally by ESPN2 and broadcast on radio in Boston on WRKO 680 AM (English) and WJDA 1300 AM (Spanish).
The Revs are just the second team in MLS history to advance to five successive conference championship games (joining the 1998-2002 Los Angeles Galaxy) and the only team from the Eastern Conference to do so.
The game is a rematch of the 2004 Eastern Conference Final, widely considered the greatest match in MLS history. In that game, the teams were tied at 3-3 after 90 minutes and played 30 minutes of scoreless overtime, so a penalty-kick tiebreaker was used to decide the Eastern Conference's entrant in MLS Cup 2004. In penalties, both teams went through the first five kicks tied at 3-3, but D.C.'s Brian Carroll netted the game-winning penalty as Clint Dempsey's shot was saved in the final shot from the spot.
Last weekend, the Revs defeated the Chicago Fire in the teams' two-game, total-goals Eastern Conference Semifinal Series. Entering Saturday's game trailing 1-0 on aggregate, the Revolution earned a 2-1 victory behind goals from Taylor Twellman and Pat Noonan to force a 30-minute extra-time session. Because neither team scored in extra time, kicks from the penalty spot were taken to determine the winner. Revs goalkeeper Matt Reis stopped Chicago's first and fourth shots and the Revs converted all four of their attempts to win, 4-2, and advance to the Eastern Conference Championship.
