New England Revolution News Release
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Revolution have re-signed midfielder Donnie Smith. A second-round pick (21st overall) in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft, Smith has made two MLS appearances for the club and played in five games in all competitions. Per club and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
A left-footed player who is capable of playing in the midfield or in defense, Smith made one regular-season appearance in each of his two seasons with New England. In addition to starting games against Chicago and Philadelphia in 2013 and 2014 respectively, Smith also made a pair of appearances in the 2014 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, starting in wins over Richmond and Rochester. The Matthews, North Carolina native also made one Open Cup appearance as a rookie in 2013.
The 24-year-old split his 2014 season between the Revs and the club's USL PRO affiliate, the Rochester Rhinos, making seven appearances for the Rhinos, including two in the postseason.
The Revolution drafted Smith with the 21st overall pick of the 2013 MLS SuperDraft following a four-year career at UNC-Charlotte. He appeared in 82 games for the 49ers, scoring 18 goals and adding 10 assists. A three-time All-Atlantic 10 performer, including first team honors in 2010 and 2012, Smith was named to the NCAA College Cup All-Tournament team as a junior in 2011 when he helped lead his team to the NCAA College Cup Final for the first time ever.
Smith and the rest of the Revolution will hold their first training session of the year later today at Gillette Stadium.
