POSTGAME QUOTES: New England Revolution II 1 vs. New York City FC II 0
Revolution II Assistant Coach Marcelo Santos
On how proud he is of the team:
Santos: "I think we have a very good group of guys. And I think when we're all working together, there is a performance we can expect from them, so we are proud and we feel like they can do more and more as we progress through the season."
On tonight's performance:
Santos: "Yeah, New York is a fantastic team, and we know the challenge they give to us. I think we created, I don't know, four or five good chances to win the game, so I think it's credit to the guys to believe in themselves and play together."
On Malcolm Fry scoring on the rebound of Jordan Adebayo-Smith's shot:
Santos: "I do because, you know, we asked our wingers to get to the end of things, you know, and we got to give credit for him [Malcolm Fry] to be there. It's an easy thing to do, and a tough thing, but it's not an easy thing to do to be there. So, a lot of credit to Jordan [Adebayo-Smith] as well to find a way to get a clear shot, so credit both of them."
On tonight's defensive performance:
Santos: "Yeah, outstanding. I don't think they had a clear chance, maybe a set piece they had a chance or one in the first half. I think Nico [Campuzano] had to come up big. But again, New York is one of the best teams in terms of attacking power, and we kept them to zero goals, so it's outstanding."
On keeping the team focused during the weather delay:
Santos: "It's always difficult because it's not a situation that we get ourselves in a lot, so it's hard to prepare the team. Every team is different, so it's trying to observe and see how they feel, not to be too excited because we're one goal up, but also not get them in a different mindset that the game just finished because all we had to do at that time is to continue to play the same way we did, so we let them rest a little bit. Once we found out the time, we told them 'Hey, concentrate. Game plan doesn't change. Just finish the game.'"
Revolution II Goalkeeper Nico Campuzano
On earning three points vs. New York City FC II:
Campuzano: "I think it was huge from everybody. Last time we played them [New York City FC II], we lost, and we felt like that game escaped us. I remember we went up, then we were a man down, and then it almost felt like we let it slip. This game we knew we had to have extra focus. They're a very good team and we were both tired so it was going to be a game of who can keep their calm and composure for the longest. It's a huge performance and I'm very proud of the guys."
On how the team stayed focused during the rain delay:
Campuzano: "It's a very weird one because from inside [the locker room], you never know when lightnings going to strike again. For the first few minutes we just took a step back and relaxed a little bit. The staff were just monitoring it and telling us 'Hey guys, there's like 15 minutes potentially to sort of get ready again'. Then you can feel the vibes again and people start just pumping music and we'll get together and play with the ball a little bit. For me, I go and do my own thing and I stretch a little bit. Each of us has our own routine, so it's pretty much like pregame again."
On team's defensive performance:
Campuzano: "I think it was great. We didn't have many chances against us. It felt like it was one of those games where we could have put away a couple more chances. Sometimes you get punished if you don't, so it was always kind of like 'Okay, we didn't put that one in, so we have to be extra focused not allow any other chances in.' At the end of the day, I think they only had two or three shots on goal that I remember. The most dangerous part of the game is probably crosses, and I think we did a good job dealing with it."
On stretch of three games in eight days:
Campuzano: "This was a quick turnaround for sure. We had Monday off, and then had just a quick training on Tuesday to go over some things tactically to get ready for tonight. I imagine it is going to be the same to get ready for Cincinnati. Every team has the same schedule so it's going to be a mental battle and we'll see who's got it."
