Revolution Fall at NYCFC, 4-2, as Undefeated Run Ends at 10 Games

BRONX, N.Y. - The New England Revolution (6-5-8; 25 pts.) saw their undefeated streak end at 10 games with a 4-2 loss at New York City FC (9-4-5, 32 pts.) on Saturday afternoon at Yankee Stadium. Revolution forward Gustavo Bou scored twice to give him six goals in the last seven games, while goalkeeper Djordje Petrović logged seven saves. However, the Revolution could not overcome a tumultuous first half that featured three first-half penalty kicks awarded to the hosts and a red card ejection of Andrew Farrell.

The Revolution fell behind early as New York City's Talles Magno was fouled by Farrell to draw a penalty, which he converted in the 10th minute. New England quickly pulled level courtesy of Bou's fifth goal of the season in the 18th minute. Carles Gil launched the attack by playing Sebastian Lletget in behind the NYCFC defense. Lletget raced to the endline and sent a cutback pass to Bou, who one-timed a shot past Sean Johnson with his right foot.

New York City was awarded another penalty kick in the 32nd minute, but Petrović kept the score level as the newcomer guessed correctly against Valentin Castellanos. The 22-year-old dove to his right for the stop, one of his MLS-career-high seven saves on the day. In the 41st minute, Farrell was ejected after another foul in the box. This time, Castellanos made no mistake from the spot and put NYCFC ahead 2-1 before halftime. After the intermission, New York City widened the gap to two goals with a tally from Gabriel Pereira in the 49th minute.

The Revolution created several late chances to cut into the deficit, including a shot from Lletget that struck the woodwork in the 60th minute. Bou pulled one back for the visitors with his second goal of the match in the 77th minute. Carles Gil was awarded with his ninth assist on the play - one behind the MLS lead. DeJuan Jones, who provided the primary helper, and Lletget are now tied for second on the Revolution with five assists each.

New England's comeback effort ultimately fell short as Castellanos scored his second goal of the match, and NYCFC's fourth, in the 82nd minute to put the game out of reach. The loss is New England's first in MLS action since April 23, snapping their MLS-best streak, and the team's first defeat on the road in the last five away games.

The Revolution continue the three-game road swing next Saturday, July 16 against the Philadelphia Union. The match at Subaru Park kicks off a 7:30 p.m. ET on WSBK-TV38, myRITV (Rhode Island), and CoziTV (Western Mass.), as well as on the radio via 98.5 The Sports Hub and 1260 AM Nossa Radio in Portuguese.

TEAM NOTES

Bruce Arena made one change to his Starting XI from last Sunday's match against FC Cincinnati, as midfielder Tommy McNamara returned from suspension to start in place of Maciel.

Gustavo Bou notched his third multi-goal game for New England across the regular season and playoffs, giving him six goals in his last seven games. The Argentinian has now scored four goals with one assist in seven league matches against New York City FC.

Bou has now totaled 37 goals since debuting for the Revolution in July 2019, including playoffs, the third most in MLS over that span. His 35 regular season goals are tied with Juan Agudelo for ninth in club history.

Sebastian Lletget registered an assist for the second consecutive match, giving him five on the season - tied for second most on the team. Lletget has contributed to a goal in three consecutive away games.

Carles Gil found the scoresheet with his ninth assist of the season, one behind the MLS lead (10). Gil pushed his league-leading total to 66 chances created with two on the day.

DeJuan Jones provided the primary assist on Bou's second goal, his second game in a row with a helper, to tie his career high with five in a season. The five assists are third most among MLS defenders.

Djordje Petrović recorded seven saves in the match, the most in his young MLS career, including a penalty kick save against Valentin Castellanos in the first half.

On Andrew Farrell's match today:

Arena: "Well, it certainly wasn't good. We'll leave it at that. You know, what more can I say?"

On his assessment of the game:

Arena: "There was a chance that we could have had a good game today despite the fact we were playing on a bad baseball field that was supposed to be a soccer field, and we're scheduling games at one o'clock in the afternoon in July. But we had two good teams. There was a chance of having a real good game, and unfortunately, that was not the case."

On if he feels the penalties were legitimate:

Arena: "No."

On Gustavo Bou's performance:

Arena: "Well, Gustavo [Bou] had a real good day. I thought our team played really well. I really do. The heart they showed in the second half was remarkable and actually, we had a chance to make it three to three if they gave the penalty kick on DeJuan [Jones]. There's a chance we had at three to two, we had a chance to get a penalty and they went down to the other end and scored. So, I just give our guys a lot of credit. Somebody owes our players and coaches an apology. I'm waiting to hear that."

On New York City being awarded three penalties in the first half:

Jones: "Yeah, it's tough when they have those chances to score a goal in the first half, especially on penalties. I don't know if they all should have been called penalties, but that's the nature of the game. So, I'm pretty proud of the fight we showed in the second half to battle with 10 players."

On Djordje Petrović:

Jones: "Yeah, [Djordje Petrovic] has been absolutely incredible. The score could have been a lot more lopsided if he didn't come up with some big time saves in some big-time moments. So, he's really adapting well to this league and he's going to continue to show his quality each and every game."

On Petrović's penalty save in the first half shifting momentum:

Jones: "Yeah, there's a comment saying, "Ball don't lie", so we were super, super happy with that save and we think it was justified. But he's a big guy in the net, so definitely intimidating for other teams' strikers trying to take penalty kicks. I'm not very surprised, because that's just what he does, but an incredible save again."

On the field conditions:

Jones: "It's very tough, especially the side of the field where the mound is for baseball. It's definitely tough to get your footing, a lot of guys were slipping and sliding around out there. Yeah, definitely not the best conditions, but both teams had to play for 90 minutes, and they got the better of us today. I mean, when [New York City FC] get the ball at midfield, they can easily play in behind. The field is a little bit smaller, so definitely tough circumstances. But at the end of the day, we didn't get the job done."

Revolution Defender Henry Kessler

On the three penalty kicks awarded to NYCFC in the first half and if the second one against him was "questionable":

Kessler: "Questionable to say the least. I don't think it was a penalty, and I don't think the third one was either. The first one I thought was. The next two I didn't think were penalties."

On communication between Djordje Petrovic and the backline:

Kessler: "Yeah, his English is very good. I think he's just growing in confidence to speak more. He had a great game and I think he's building week in, week out. Yeah, hopefully he continues to play very well like he did today."

On playing at Yankee Stadium and at 1:00 p.m.:

Kessler: "The surface is tough. The first half, I'm on infield grass. It's actually not even flat, it's raised, but I suppose both teams have to deal with it. So, the surface is not great and then one p.m. is a bit hot. But hey, once again, both teams had to deal with it, so that shouldn't be an excuse."

On Coach Arena saying he was proud of the team's effort in the second half:

Kessler: "He said similar things. He was proud of how we fought. I honestly think we had a chance to get a point. There was a time when DeJuan went down in the box and then they scored their fourth goal, but from my point of view, it looked like he got fouled, so then that gives us a penalty with a chance to tie the game. We created a lot of chances, we gave up a few as well, but we went for it and I think that's what Bruce iterated to you guys and then reiterated to us." Santiago Ro
