Sacramento Republic FC News Release
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento Republic FC score two early goals, but concede three in the second half as they fall 3-2 at home to Reno 1868 FC on Saturday night.
Republic FC came out firing on all cylinders, scoring in just the second minute of the match. Cameron Iwasa charged into the box before laying the ball off to Jure Matjasic. The Slovenian international beat Reno 1868 FC keeper JT Marcinkowski with his one-touch shot as Matjasic tallied his first goal for Republic FC.
Cameron Iwasa would grab a goal of his own just 10 minutes later. Left back Justin Schmidt sent a long, looping ball forward for Iwasa from his own back line. Iwasa controlled the ball with his chest on a dead sprint and beat an oncoming Marcinkowski for the early 2-0 lead in the 12th minute. The home side would take the lead into halftime.
Reno 1868 FC would storm back in the second half to take the lead with three consecutive goals in a span of five minutes. Midfielder Paul Marie opened his side's tally in the 57th minute. Brian Brown and Mo Thiaw, both subbed on at halftime, accounted for the next two goals. Thiaw scored the equalizer in the 59th minute, with Marie getting the assist. Brown then scored the go-ahead goal in the 62nd minute with an assist from Thiaw.
Republic FC fought for the equalizer, but was unable to penetrate the Reno 1868 FC defense and fell 3-2 in their first home loss of the 2018 USL season.
Sacramento start their 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup run on Wednesday, May 16, when they take on San Francisco City FC at Sacramento State University. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
