SAN JOSE (July 1, 2003) – U.S. Rep. Zoe Lofgren will be the CyberRays' honorary captain when the team plays the San Diego Spirit at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Spartan Stadium on Girl Power Night.

The South Bay congresswoman has represented San Jose and Silicon Valley in Washington since 1994. Among many other honors, Rep. Lofgren is a former Feminist of the Year, named by the San Jose-South Bay National Organization for Women.

Girl Power Night celebrates programs that support and encourage the success of girls and women in their personal, family, community and professional lives.

``The San Jose CyberRays inspire women of all ages, especially younger generations, to set their standards high in life and achieve their goals no matter how far they must reach,'' said Lofgren (D-San Jose). ``It is a privilege to be the honorary captain on Girl Power Night, and I am very grateful to the CyberRays for their work in the San Jose. It is programs like these that make the difference in our community through their continued

efforts to encourage women to excel in every field. I look forward to seeing the CyberRays win on Wednesday night!''

On Girl Power Night, Seagate, PG&E, the Calpine Foundation, PennySaver and several individual donors are providing tickets through the CyberRays' Big Buddy Program to young girls who, for economic, social or cultural reasons, might not be able to attend games. Working through the Santa Clara Office of Women's Advocacy, the tickets will be distributed by several community organizations including Friends Outside, Asian American Recovery Services, City of San Jose Student Advocates Program, Right Connection, Plugged In, Young Women's Leadership Alliance, Washington United Youth Center, Franklin McKinley District Office, Girls for a Change and Girls Inc.

The CyberRays are one of seven WUSA teams joining the Women's Sports Foundation's GoGirlGo Project in which players will contribute their time and expertise to educate young girls about health risk behaviors and life lessons such as body image, bullying, diversity, smoking, drugs and stress.
