Atlanta Beat News Release
ATLANTA (July 1, 2003) - Atlanta Beat defender Kylie Bivens, midfielder Cindy Parlow and goalkeeper Briana Scurry were selected to the 25-player U.S. Women's National Team roster that will prepare for a July 13, match versus South American champion, Brazil. Head Coach April Heinrichs will select 20 players out of the 25 in camp, to face Brazil at Tad Gormley Stadium on Sunday, July 13, at 3 p.m. CT. The game will be televised live on ESPN.
The three Beat stars were last called up to the U.S. Women's National Team in mid June for the game versus Ireland in Salt Lake City. Parlow and Scurry each played a full half in the game, while Bivens was not selected for the match day roster. Scurry currently leads the WUSA in goals against average (0.82), winning percentage (.682%), save percentage (80.4%), and is tied for the league lead in wins (6) and shutouts (4). Parlow, ranks as the Beat's 3rd leading scorer, with three goals and three assists for nine points. Her three goals came in a 4-2 win over the Philadelphia Charge, as she earned player of the week honors for the hat trick in the big win.
Bivens helps lead the Atlanta Beat's defense from her right marking back position. The Beat's defense ranks as the best in the league, allowing only 0.75 goals per game through 12 games. Bivens has also scored one goal and assisted on two from her marking back position.
Parlow and Scurry are regular starters for the U.S. Women and are expected to be among the 20 players chosen for the squad that will represent the U.S. at the 2003 FIFA Women's World Cup. Bivens, a WUSA all-star in 2002, is a rising star in the league and will battle for a spot at marking back. Bivens has limited international experience (7 caps), but with her exceptional play this season, she should not be counted out.
The Atlanta Beat is one of eight professional women's soccer teams that make up the Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA), the world's premier women's soccer league. Atlanta Beat tickets range in price from $10 to $45 and are on sale now at all TicketMaster outlets or charge by phone by calling 404-249-6400.
