Atlanta Beat News Release

ATLANTA (August 26, 2003) - U.S. Women's National Team Head Coach April Heinrichs today named the U.S. Women's National Team roster for the 2003 FIFA Women's World Cup, which will include three Atlanta Beat players. Briana Scurry and Cindy Parlow will be making a return trip to the Women's World Cup, while Kylie Bivens will make her first trip to the most prestigious soccer tournament in the world.

Scurry, after falling out of form following the 1999 Women's World Cup, has used the past three seasons in the WUSA to regain a stronghold on the number one goalkeeper position for the U.S. Women. Scurry, who was named 2003 WUSA Goalkeeper of the Year, will be making her third World Cup appearance for the U.S. Women. She was the starting goalkeeper for the U.S. in 1995 and 1999 and has recorded a 9-1-1 record and 0.62 goals against average in two World Cup appearances.

Parlow is making her second trip to the World Cup. In 1999, Parlow played in six World Cup games, recording two goals and two assists. She was a 2003 WUSA All-Star and at only 25 years old, ranks as 5th all-time leading goal scorer in U.S. Women's National Team history, with 61 goals in 126 games played for the U.S.

With only seven National Team caps to her name, Bivens has been an onlooker for most of the U.S. Women's matches over the past two years. A stellar season in the WUSA in 2003, paved the way for Bivens to be named to her first World Cup squad. Bivens is a defender, with the ability to move into the midfield and she possesses an exciting combination of speed, skill and aggressiveness.

The U.S. Women begin World Cup play versus Sweden on September 21, at RFK Stadium in Washington D.C. Prior to the start of the 2003 FIFA Women's World Cup, the U.S. will face Costa Rica on September 1, at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, and then will face Mexico on September 7, at Spartan Stadium in San Jose.
