Three Power Players to Compete in Women's World Cup

August 26, 2003 - Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA)
New York Power News Release

NEW YORK, NY - New York Power forward Tiffeny Milbrett, defender Christie Pearce and midfielder Shannon Boxx were selected to the 20-player U.S. Women's National Team roster that will represent the United States in the 2003 Women's World Cup. For the Power, this marks the first time the team will have three Women's National Team members in competition. The USA will train from Aug. 29-Sep. 3 and will then travel to San Jose, Calif., where the U.S. will be based from Sept. 4-7. That schedule includes two matches, the first against Costa Rica on Sept. 1 at the Home Depot Center (8 p.m. PT on ESPN2) in the first-ever game for a U.S. National Team at the sparkling new stadium and the second on Sept. 7 against Mexico at Spartan Stadium (10 a.m. PT on ESPN).

Milbrett, who tied a U.S. record with five goals in a match against Panama at the CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup last November, is just two goals away from hitting the magical 100-goal mark, an achievement previously reached by just four players in international soccer history, two of them Americans (Mia Hamm and Michelle Akers) and two Italians (Carolina Morace and Elisabetta Vignotto).

Pearce, a U.S. starter in the 2000 Olympics, recently reached the 100-cap mark. She has become a regular with the team again after suffering an ACL injury at the end of the 2001 WUSA season, and remains the only player from a small soccer school (Monmouth University in N.J.) to achieve success with the U.S. Women's National Team.

Boxx, the only uncapped player on the roster, will be making her first appearance for the United States after a successful 2003 WUSA Season. A hard working midfielder, Boxx finished the 2003 WUSA season with a goal and eight assists for the New York Power. For her outstanding efforts, she was selected All-WUSA First Team and the New York Power Team MVP.
