Reno Aces News Release
Today's Game: Reno enters tonight's 7:05 p.m. contest in search of a series win in Fresno. Greg Gross will send right-hander Troy Scribner to the mound (2-2, 5.74 ERA) who is making his 7th start of the season. The Aces are 12-10 in the Month of May with seven games left to play.
About Last Night: The Aces pitching staff brought their best stuff Wednesday afternoon in Fresno, allowing just two runs in a 5-2 victory. Taylor Clarke got the start for Reno and went 5.2 innings, allowed just one hit and struck out six. Neftali Feliz, Jared Miller and Jimmie Sherfy came on in relief to secure the win. Sherfy came on with one out in the eighth inning and retired the first two batters he faced. The 2017 PCL All-Star added two strikeouts in the bottom of the ninth inning to earn his second five-out save of the season and eighth save overall.
Bullpen Ship: Braden Shipley made his Triple-A debut out of the bullpen Tuesday night in Fresno. The Nevada alum has come out of the bullpen once in his professional career prior to last night, August 26, 2015 in Double-A. In his 131 professional games, Shipley has made 129 career starts and pitched 7.0 innings out of the bullpen.
5-out Sherf: Jimmie Sherfy recorded his second five-out save of the season yesterday, his 8th save on the year. The 2017 Pacific Coast League All-Star recorded his first five-out save of the year on April 30 against El Paso. Sherfy has pitched 1.2 innings or more just nine times in his Aces career: 2 - '18, 6 - '17 and 1 - '16, but has only recorded two five-out saves in his Aces career.
Hey, Brito: Socrates Brito made his first start of the season with the Arizona Diamondbacks yesterday afternoon in Milwaukee. The outfielder went 0-for-3 and the D-backs lost by a score of 9-2. This was Brito's first start in the Big Leagues since September 30, 2016.
Streaking History: On this date in 2011, Jo-Jo Reyes makes his 28th straight start without recording a victory, tying the major league record shared by Cliff Curtis (1910-11, Braves, Cubs, Phillies) and Matt Keough (1978-79, A's). The Blue Jays southpaw, who leaves the game trailing 5-0 to New York after just three innings of work, hasn't won a start since June 13, 2008. Kris Medlen is the only Aces starter this season (3+ starts) not to record a win. Medlen is 0-5 with Reno and 0-1 with Arizona. His last victory came on September 2, 2017 with the Gwinnett Braves. He went 7.0 innings, struck out eight and allowed four hits against the Triple-A National Champion Durham Bulls.
Swing and Miss: The Pacific Coast League pitchers have struck out 6,103 batters to date (8.25 per game). Last season, pitchers averaged 7.59 strikeouts per game in the PCL and 7.63 in 2016. The Major League average for strikeouts per game is 8.64. Taylor Clarke is second in the PCL with 56 K's in 52.2 innings. Only Austin Gomber of Memphis has more (57).
