Iowa Cubs News Release
ROUND ROCK, TX - A two-run second inning put the Round Rock Express (20-28) on top and they never relinquished the lead as the Iowa Cubs (16-29) sank 5-4, Thursday at Dell Diamond. Each of the I-Cubs' last five games have been decided by one run with the I-Cubs coming out on top three times.
Iowa's offense was steady as the team scored single runs in each of the fourth, sixth, eighth and ninth innings. In the fourth, Efren Navarro singled and came in to score on a Jacob Hannemann double. Navarro would contribute to three of four of Iowa's scoring efforts as he knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth and another with a single in the eighth. He ended his night 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Trailing 3-5 heading into the ninth, Iowa rallied, led by a Hannemann walk to open the frame. Taylor Davis singled the runner to third and the run scored on a sacrifice fly from Bijan Rademacher for the first out of the inning. On the bump, former Cub farmhand R.J. Alvarez was able to work out of the frame to preserve the Round Rock victory.
Adbert Alzolay (2-4) took the loss, allowing five runs on nine hits and five walks. The right-hander saw his ERA rise to a season-high 5.30 as he dropped his third-straight decision. The Iowa bullpen was excellent as Kyle Ryan whiffed one over two flawless frames. Shae Simmons picked up where Ryan left off, fanning one over a perfect inning.
The I-Cubs return to Principal Park for a five game homestand with the New Orleans Baby Cakes running Friday through Tuesday. The homestand features Firework Friday and a special 1:08 start time on Memorial Day. For more information or tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
