Arlington Renegades News Release
The Arlington Renegades were handed their first loss of the season by the Houston Roughnecks on Sunday at the TDECU Stadium in Houston. The first quarter of the contest resulted in an early 13-0 lead for the Houston Roughnecks. An opening drive 42-yard field goal by Houston's Hunter Duplessis is what put them on the board first. Riding the early momentum, Roughnecks quarterback Brandon Silvers threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to RB Nick Holley to score the first touchdown of the contest.
The Arlington Renegades bounced back in the second quarter, regaining control of the game, when WR LuJuan Winningham scored the teams first offensive touchdown of the season.
Winningham caught a 4-yard pass from Drew Plitt to put the Renegades on the board with 9:23 left in the quarter. Plitt continued the team's scoring momentum with a 13 yard touchdown pass to TE Nate Becker. After a successful two point conversion to WR Tyler Vaughns, the Renegades took their first lead of the game. Arlington was up 14-11 headed into the half.
In the second half of the game, Houston quarterback Silvers threw a 15-yard pass to WR Cedric Byrd to put up 6 more for the Roughnecks. The next big play of the half happened early in the fourth when Houston DB Sean Davis intercepted Plitt's pass, returning it for 15-yards. Houston's regained possession set them up with a scoring drive. RBMax Borghi had a 4-yard rushing touchdown that increased the Roughneck's lead to 9.
The Renegades' special teams and defense provided the offense with several extra opportunities thanks to the three Houston turnovers in the second quarter alone. WR LuJuan Winningham forced two fumbles, the first that was recovered by TE Sal Cannella and the second by LS Antonio Ortiz. DB Josh Hawkins forced and recovered the final fumble of the quarter giving the Arlington offense the ability to put up 14 points.
